THANKS to our committee, faculty, students, parents and benefactors for a great Catholic Schools Week!  Some comments from students  honoring Fr. Carl, Fr. Steve, and Deacon Eric:

Fr. Carl --- homilies…sports in your homilies make me pay extra attention
You are constantly supporting us---you’re everywhere---my favorite homily---“no matter how messy the sin” God can always helps us clean it upMy favorite was when your Mom would not let you go to the Cardinal game---you had Sunday school.  Everything happens for a reason.”   I listened to your homily today and then did better in class and got a good grade!

Deacon Eric---taught us the shema, I love your sense of humor, jokes, Scripture, your family tradition of the birthdaysgood at shooting marshmallow guns
Ps  We’re crossing our fingers that Bishop Braxton assigns you to our parish---(sorry Ryan---he has to be a Diocesan priest, not a Resurrectionist! )

Fr. Steve ---do you remember helping us make stone soup?you taught me to pay it forward and be nice---you are the sower and we are the seedYou showed me that there is suffering in the world and we have to overcome it.

Practicing Nonattachment    Allowing Our Children To Be
Truly loving our children requires us to set them free and practice nonattachment.  Trust and allow.

Parenting asks us to rise to some of the most difficult challenges this world has to offer, and one of its greatest paradoxes arises around the issue of attachment. On the one hand, successful parenting requires that we love our children, and most of us love in a very attached way. On the other hand, it also requires that we let go of our children at the appropriate times, which means we must practice some level of nonattachment. Many parents find this difficult because we love our children fiercely, more than we will ever love anyone, and this can cause us to overstep our bounds with them as their independence grows. Yet truly loving them requires that we set them free.

Attachment to outcome is perhaps the greatest obstacle on the parenting path, and the one that teaches us the most about the importance of practicing nonattachment. We commonly perceive our children to be extensions of ourselves, imagining that we know what’s best for them, but our children are people in their own right with their own paths to follow in this world. They may be called to move in directions we fear, don’t respect, or don’t understand, yet we must let them go. This letting go happens gradually throughout our lives with our children until we finally honor them as fully grown adults who no longer require our guidance. At this point, it is important that we treat them as peers who may or may not seek our input into their lives. This allows them, and us, to fully realize the greatest gift parents can offer their offspring —independence.

Letting go in any area of life requires a deep trust in the universe, in the overall meaning and purpose of existence. Remembering that there is more to us and our children than meets the eye can help us practice nonattachment, even when we feel overwhelmed by concern and the desire to interfere. We are all souls making our way in the world and making our way, ultimately, back to the same source. This can be our mantra as we let our children go in peace and confidence.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED   Jesus does a bit of grandstanding this week as he catches a ton of fish and a couple of Apostles without even leaving shore.   How often in life do we simply shake our heads in disbelief when the unexpected happens?  It has happened often for me --- when I see a student master something they don’t think they can understand --- when we set lofty goals and meet them --- when people all around me pick up all the pieces and make this place work!  It is an amazing story --- it only took a good catch of fish to hook disciples!  Come and get hooked this weekend!  Don’t be afraid --- we are all sinful people!

Sincerely,

Michael L. Kish

Dear ICS Families:
In years past we have collected monies for Autism Speaks and participated in the Walk for Autism as a family.  This year we are turning our efforts locally to Happy Trails Therapeutic Horsemanship.  This is a non-profit organization run by Jim Donley and his family. It is an equine therapy that assists with rehabilitation and one to one therapy for the developmentally disabled.  Therapeutic riding takes disabled riders through complex movements which uses all the bodies’ muscles. This type of therapy has had excellent results when used on individuals living with autism.
Some of you may not know that our youngest son Aidan was diagnosed at age 16 months with Autism. Through hours of therapy and love and support from family and friends Aidan is doing really well and will be attending ICS next fall. Happy Trails was a large part of his recovery effort and is run completely from donations. Happy Trails also offers rehabilitation for returning soldiers who have been injured in wars. The most amazing thing is that this help comes free of charge!
Happy Trails is in danger of closing because of large land developers that are trying to take over the family farm. I can think of no better charity to give to and the fact that it is one of two centers in Illinois that works with veterans with disabilities in the Horses for Heroes program I want to assist them in keeping the barn doors open for all who are in need of their services. Please donate what you can or if you are unable to donate say a prayer for this family that has done so much for so many.
Thank you,
The Sullivan family
Donations may be sent through school Margaret 8(K)
Or mailed to Kim Sullivan, 201 Heritage, Columbia IL, 62236
