STEPS TO RESPECTThe Committee for Children…Researchers found that schools that had participated in the Steps to Respect program for two years experienced:
A 31 percent decline in bullying
A 70 percent reduction in destructive bystander behavior
A 36 percent decline in non-bullying aggressive behavior

As part of our continual efforts with Steps to Respect, we are looking for more parents to assist with recess duty. We do have a small group of parents who have volunteered to help with recess duty. A handful more would really help lighten the load for all! Please contact Mrs. Epplin if interested. Thanks to our volunteers!

One Flaw In Women allan jirikovec
Women have strengths that amaze men. They bear hardships and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream. They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in. They stand up to injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have. They go to the doctor with a frightened friend. They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding
Their hearts break when a friend dies. They grieve at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love. They have compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have vital things to say and everything to give.
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN, IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.
BINGO Saints Peter and Paul School has started up Bingo. For all you I-255 and B-29 people out there, this is a chance to have some fun, possibly win, and support Catholic Education in our West Deanery. See the attachment and head out for an evening of fun.
--- Baseball…is a dream factory…an escape from reality…a game. But the Cardinals still had a great season and you celebrate that and remember the life lesson.
---Sometimes it’s the smallest things that take up the most room in our hearts…
Occasionally, a student reads the newsletter…here’s one for them:
From: Charles J. Sykes, 1996 Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can’t Read, Write, or Add. (of course NCLB has solved all of this…)and of course, this isn’t our students!)
Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your Self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss
Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault , don't whine about mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you' ll end up working for one.
RED RIBBON WEEK IS OCTOBER 17-25 Enrique S. Camarena was killed in the line of duty working for the DEA. In his memory, a national campaign was started to educate our children about the dangers of drugs. Many people make light of this, just like they make light of everything until it happens in their family. We’ll quietly celebrate by remembering these drug facts…
I HAD A DRUG PROBLEM…I had a drug problem when I was young.
I was drug to church on Sunday mornings. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals.
I was drug to family reunions no matter the weather.
I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults and teachers.
I was drug to my room to do school work.
I was drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents.
Those drugs are still in my veins, and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today’s children had this kind of drug problem, America might be a better place and our families a little more united.
Red Ribbon Parent’s Pledge
- I will be a good example for my child.
- I will show my children love each and every day through words and action.
- I will listen to my children and let them know I value what they say.
- I will whisper criticism and shout praise.
- I will constantly develop my child’s self-esteem.
- I will encourage my child to meet new challenges while setting realistic goals.
- I will enjoy my children and spend quality, family time with them.
- I will respect my child as a unique individual.
- I will have realistic expectations for my children and allow them to learn and grow from their mistakes. This will be done as long as their decisions do not cause self-destructive behaviors.
- I will love my children unconditionally.
IMPORTANT PARISH NEWS: We talk about stewardship and time-talent-treasure all the time. If we went down a parish list, we could check your name off in many categories I’m sure. But every year, we give a chance to RENEW-RE-COMMIT-OR CHANGE your ministry. Make the time to take the time and fill out the time and talent commitment cards. Extra Cards are available in the back of church. Put them in the collection basket or drop off at parish office so we can all be RENEWED in our efforts to follow in HIS FOOTSTEPS. Thanks for walking the talk!
The St. Vincent de Paul Society will be collecting warm winter clothing during the weekend Masses of October 17th & 18th---THIS WEEKEND! This year there is a great need for coats, sweatshirts, sweaters, hats and gloves. A new item we will be collecting this year is new or gently used heavy socks. A special container will be available for the socks. As in past years blankets, comforters and sleeping bags will also be collected for distribution. All sizes, including children's are needed. Thanks, Jim Held
November is our month to remember our beloved dead. As a parish we will begin the month of remembrance with a Mass for the Commemoration of All the Faithfully Departed (All Souls) on Monday, November 2, at 8:05 and 7p.m.
To enhance our remembering the Bereavement Committee invites anyone who wishes to participate in creating our Wall of Remembrance. Bring to church a small photograph of your loved one (no larger than 4 x 6) and place it in the basket near the Blessed Virgin Mary altar starting October 4. All photographs will be displayed on a wall near this altar throughout the month of November. Please put your name on the back of the photograph and enclose it in a self addressed stamped envelope if you would like it returned to you. We will hold an All Souls Day Mass for all-school on Monday, Nov. 2. Let’s start collecting pictures for the Wall of Remembrance
Knight of Columbus Annual Hay Ride and Barbecue Saturday, Nov. 7, around 6 p.m. Centennial Pavilion in City Park Everyone is invited to an evening of food, fun, and friendship. Please bring lawn games for open play. We will begin the night’s festivities by honoring our Holy Mother with the Living Rosary, candles, torches, and a huge rosary rope, making this a special experience for all ages. After the rosary, the hayrides and barbecue will commence.
The Knights will provide hot dogs, chili, chips, soda and apple cider. We would appreciate if families with last names starting with A–M bring a small side dish, and those with last names N–Z bring a small dessert. If you have any questions, please call Scott Hippisley at 281- 5947 or Steve Dressler at 281-7889.
Make a QUEST Retreat: Nov. 14–15 Coming up on the weekend of November 14 & 15 IS A DIOCESAN RETREAT CALLED “QUEST”. Quest is a 33 hour program of sharing for high school freshmen and sophomores. It is an experience of being together with other teens so that the participants can find out more about God, themselves, and their relationships with family and friends. Quests are conducted by a team of lay adults, priests, sisters, and teens.
THIS PARTICULAR “QUEST” IS AT ST. JAMES PARISH IN MILLSTADT, IL. THE COST IS $30
AND OUR PARISH WILL PAY HALF. To learn more about “Quest”, please visit www.bellevilletec.com OR CONTACT JOHN WHITWORTH AT JWHIT77@HTC.NET. Call the parish office for an application. (So far two teens have expressed an interest to attend — so you won’t be going alone!)

SELF PRAISE STINKS One of my Dad’s favorite lines…I was raised on it. People would come up to him and say “Aren’t you proud of your son Mike?” And he would say…”I’m proud of all my kids”. Dad knew not to play favorites though he did call me “shadow” on the side since I followed him around like a puppy. This Sunday, the “Sons of Thunder”, James and John, want to sit in high places with Jesus. He lets them know about “drinking from the cup”. It is not easy being a Christian. As a matter of fact, few ever really measure up, even the saints. Christianity is so upside down of our human nature that we constantly have to fight human nature, go against the grain, be counter-cultural, and make ourselves do what we are not inclined to do…and then when we do that, we end up feeling pretty good and wondering if we can sit at Jesus right hand! As Dad said, “life’s great…as long as you don’t weaken”! Be counter-cultural…come to the Liturgy this weekend…you’ll feel good when you leave refreshed and knowing that a change of heart is happening!
Sincerely,
Michael L. Kish
Principal
